| appendix |
Appendicitis is inflammation (inflammation) of the appendix. The appendix is a small, tube-like organ attached to the large intestine. The condition is due to blockage inside the appendix. The blockage leads to increased pressure and swelling. Appendicitis can occur at any age but it is more common during childhood and adolescence.
Symptoms
The main symptom is abdominal pain. It is initially sluggish but deteriorates over time.
Other symptoms include:
- Stomach bloating
- loss of appetite
- nausea and vomiting
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Inability to pass gas
- low-grade fever
Causes
The exact cause of acute appendicitis is still unclear. However, it is associated with obstruction inside the periphery. This blockage may be caused by small pieces of feces, a foreign body, or an infection.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis may include a thorough physical examination and careful consideration of the symptoms. If the diagnosis is not clear, then laboratory tests and ultrasound or CT scans may be performed.
Treatment usually involves surgical removal of the appendix. This procedure is known as appendectomy or appendectomy. The appendix is removed using laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. In this procedure, the surgeon uses a tapered instrument (laparoscope), which is inserted into the abdomen through small incisions (cuts). This eliminates the need for an abdominal incision.
